ETIAS for Slovakia
Slovakia is a full EU and Schengen member. Visa-exempt travelers need the same €20 ETIAS authorization used across the whole Schengen Area to enter.
Slovakia is a full member of both the European Union and the Schengen Area, so the same ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) rules that apply across the rest of Schengen apply here too. Visa-exempt travelers — including citizens of the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and Japan — will need a valid ETIAS travel authorization before entering Slovakia once the system becomes operational in Q4 2026. ETIAS is not a visa; it is a lightweight, largely automated pre-travel screening that costs €20 for most applicants, stays valid for three years or until your passport expires, and covers stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period anywhere in the Schengen Area.
Getting to Slovakia
Slovakia's main gateway is Bratislava Airport (BTS), served by a growing number of low-cost European routes. Because Bratislava sits only about an hour from Vienna, many international travelers instead fly into Vienna International Airport in neighboring Austria and continue by bus or train — both airports work equally well since a single ETIAS authorization covers travel across the whole Schengen Area. Travelers heading to eastern Slovakia often use Košice International Airport instead. Slovakia also shares land borders with Austria, Czechia, Poland, and Hungary, all fellow Schengen members, which makes road and rail crossings straightforward for anyone already holding a valid ETIAS.
Do I need ETIAS for Slovakia?
Yes — if you are a visa-exempt third-country national, you will need ETIAS to enter Slovakia, exactly as you would for France, Germany, or any other Schengen country. There is no separate Slovak application, form, or fee; ETIAS is one uniform authorization for the entire Schengen Area. Once approved, it is linked electronically to your passport, so border officers in Bratislava, Košice, or at any land crossing can verify it without any extra paperwork on your part.
Can one ETIAS cover a trip beyond Slovakia?
Yes. Because Slovakia sits at the crossroads of Austria, Czechia, Poland, and Hungary — all Schengen members — a single approved ETIAS lets you combine a Slovak city break with stops in Vienna, Prague, Kraków, or Budapest on the same trip, as long as your total time in the Schengen Area stays within 90 days in any 180-day period.
