How ETIAS Works: From Application to Border

ETIAS is designed to be fast and simple. The entire process — from application to authorization — happens online. Here is how it works at every stage.

1

Pre-travel application

Before traveling, you submit an online application providing personal details, passport information, and answering security questions. The application takes approximately 10 minutes to complete.

2

Automated screening

Your application is cross-checked against EU security databases including SIS, VIS, Europol, and Interpol. This automated screening takes only minutes for most applicants.

3

Decision

Most applications receive an instant approval. If additional checks are needed, you may be asked to provide supplementary documentation. In rare cases, processing can take up to 30 days.

4

Travel authorization

Once approved, your ETIAS is electronically linked to your passport. No printed document is required. Airlines and carriers will verify your authorization before boarding.

5

At the border

Upon arrival, border officers can verify your ETIAS status electronically. Having an approved ETIAS does not guarantee entry — border officers retain the authority to refuse entry based on standard immigration criteria.

What if your application is refused?

If your ETIAS application is refused, you will receive a notification explaining the specific reasons. You have the right to appeal the decision within 30 days. The appeal is submitted to the member state that made the refusal decision.

  • Security concerns identified during automated screening
  • Previous immigration violations or overstays
  • Incomplete or inaccurate information in the application
  • Invalid or expired travel document
