ETIAS for Spain
Spain is a major Schengen destination. Visa-exempt travelers need the standard €20 ETIAS authorization — there is no separate Spain-specific form.
Spain is one of the most visited countries in the Schengen Area, and from the expected Q4 2026 launch, visa-exempt travelers will need an approved ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) before flying into Madrid, Barcelona, or any other Spanish airport. The rule is the same as everywhere else in Schengen: citizens of the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Japan, and other visa-exempt countries apply once online, pay a €20 fee (waived under 18 or over 70), and receive an authorization valid for three years, or until the passport used to apply expires, whichever comes first. It permits stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the whole Schengen Area, not just Spain.
Getting to Spain
Spain's busiest international gateways are Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport (MAD) and Barcelona–El Prat Airport (BCN), alongside major regional airports in Málaga, Alicante, and Palma de Mallorca. All of them apply the same ETIAS entry check at passport control, regardless of whether you land on the mainland or one of the islands, since both the Balearic and Canary Islands are part of the Schengen Area. Travelers can also enter overland from France across the Pyrenees or by ferry from destinations such as Morocco or the UK, and the same ETIAS requirement applies at any of these crossing points, not only at airports.
Is there a separate ETIAS application form for Spain?
No. Searches for an 'ETIAS Spain online application' or an 'ETIAS form for Spain' are common, but there is no country-specific version — ETIAS is a single online application covering the entire Schengen Area. You apply once through the official system, and whether Spain is your only stop or the first of several Schengen countries on your itinerary, the same authorization applies everywhere. Be cautious of third-party websites that charge more than the official €20 fee or imply that Spain requires extra paperwork.
When should I apply before visiting Spain?
Most applications are approved within minutes, though some are flagged for manual review and can take up to 30 days. Because Spain is such a high-volume tourist destination, especially in summer, it is worth applying as soon as your travel dates are confirmed rather than waiting until the last minute, so that any delay does not put your flight or hotel booking at risk.
